About 1/3rd of homeowners have no mortgage and own their homes outright (just another odd fact that I heard somewhere and can't remember where).  This fact may be a few years old, but it was accurate as of a few years ago.

I think most people have a mortgage on their home when they first buy it, but people that have lived in their homes for awhile may have paid their entire mortgage off and own their home outright.
