Hi, I am planning a trip to TJ from San Diego. I am going with 8 other people and all of us have passports except for this one individual. Does he need a passport to go to Mexico and to come back to the U.S.? Or is it still ok to have a valid I.D. and proof of citizenship (birth certificate)? It is currently 01-03-08. So does he really need his passport?

  1. yes. if not just to get into mexico, to get back into the us for sure!

  2. Yes and all your shots.

  3. You DON'T need the passport just yet.

With your I.D. or birth certificate you are fine.

  4. yes u need a passport i recently went to tj and upon leaving they asked to see my passport and thank god i had it because they werent accepting ID's anymore

  5. I thought you did, but apparently that only applies to air travel.  http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbp... According to the govt website, you can use a driver's license plus government issued proof of citizenship.

(Personally, I wouldn't go without a passport, but if the government website says it's ok, I guess it is.  I would actually call the passport office in your city and confirm this - it really wouldn't hurt to have a secondary confirmation)

  6. NO! Passports are not needed for LAND travel to and from Mexico until sometime later this year.  an announcement will be made by  Homeland security and the State Dep't about the exact date later..  See website below and read top half of the page carefully to see the current info.

  7. May to get back into the US

  8. My husband just went Jan. 2, 2008 (drove) and he said you must have a passport if you want to walk through. He said that is reality no matter what the government websites say.
