She and her Best Friend were brainstorming last night and thought of a few ways to earn some money. Baking Company being number one.

She was talking to me about it last night and asked about the health regulations. I wasn't sure how to being searching.

Are they specific for where you live?

Does it matter what age she is?

  1. check with your local government offices, but she will need to create a business, collect sales tax (if necessary), file with the state, etc.  Its not just saying you will do it, there is a ton of paperwork to make a legal business.  Check with your state government website or an attorney.

  2. To own a business, she (or another business partner) would have to be 18 years of age.   (You could obviously register the business under your name, but would then be liable for any action taken against the business.)

Her business would have to be registered with the local department of health, and she'd need any and all of her licenses to be current.  Her kitchen would also be subject to regular inspection.

Contact your municipality to discover the logistics behind operating a bakery.  Businesses are formed through the Department of State's business and corporations bureau.

Best of luck to your daughter!  You're a great mom for encouraging her, and helping her research her idea!

(If she remains small scale, maintains a clean kitchen and keeps off the radar, she may be fine on her own.  The board of health isn't after teenage girls.)

  3. Daughter's age?

Is she careful with things? knowing what is edible and what is contamination?

If she does, her business won't be that big anyway, then no permit needed.

You being parent will take the problem if she did any damage to anyone, not her.

If the potential income is in tens thousands USD a month, then for sure, a business license + health inspection + +.

Worry not, if she is teenager. Keep a close eye supervision as Mom-to-daughter helping together.

  4. There are three things you must do to start your own business from home. First go to your local city and apply for a business license, cost is usually under $100, next call the local Health Department in your area, they will advise what is needed. And last go to a bank of your choice and open a business checking account, they also will advise you the procedure. That's all you need to do.

  5. If she is starting a Baking Company, then age does matter.

    18+
