I think NAACP helps only African-American people, but does NAACP help and advocate for Civil Rights/advancement of other racial minorities? Or at the least, do they have interest in advancing other non-African American minorities such as Hispanic, Asian, Native Americans, Latinos and etc? Anyone know for sure?

  1. i have not seen them help any other minorites, but maybe i missed it.

i think that they should, as African Americans are not the only ones descriminated against at times

  2. From the NAACP homepage:

The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.

    Vision Statement

The vision of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights and there is no racial hatred or racial discrimination.

    Objectives

The following statement of objectives is found on the first page of the NAACP Constitution — the principal objectives of the Association shall be:

To ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of all citizens

To achieve equality of rights and eliminate race prejudice among the citizens of the United States

To remove all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes

To seek enactment and enforcement of federal, state, and local laws securing civil rights

To inform the public of the adverse effects of racial discrimination and to seek its elimination

To educate persons as to their constitutional rights and to take all lawful action to secure the exercise thereof, and to take any other lawful action in furtherance of these objectives, consistent with the NAACP's Articles of Incorporation and this Constitution.

  3. Yes.  Colored in NAACP stands for people of color.

I am sorry.  I read it in a book years ago.

Musica, I am not surprised.  Some of its' founders were white.

  4. if they help for the advancement for the people of colour [whatever that means] surely that means that they should help everyone EXCEPT black people and white people because black and white aren't colours strictly speaking, whereas yellow, red, brown and green are so that is just dandy

  5. i think they actually help anyone who has been disadvantaged or unfairly treated due to his/her skin color- that includes whites as well. the name just happens to include the wording "colored people". However, you can see for example in the problematic discussion of adequate education and schooling opportunities for blacks not too long ago that their focus was indeed the African American community

    http://brownvboard.org/summary/

These were issues that simply did not affect whites, and so organisations like the NAACP engaged themselves for black causes. Because these issues and others like them are still very pertinent and directly related to and correlated with the plight of public schools today (inner city schools in particular, as well as schools in areas populated largely by minorities), the NAACP continues to work on them.

  6. I saw a video years ago that mentioned that the NAACP got involved in the case of a white woman teacher in Florida who was getting fired because she was pregnant.  That was back in the late 60s-early 70s.  Also, there are some branches of the NAACP whose members are primarily races other than black. This is common throughout the Pacific Northwest. Why? Because there's not as many Black people living here as California or places back East or down South.
