Does Nikon or Canon make better cameras? Better lenses?

I once read this great quote:

Canons are designed by engineers - Nikons are designed by photographers.

Since many of Canon's point and shoots have Sony sensors, and some of their DSLR's have sensors made by other companies as well, I think the Sony sensor in the Nikon camera argument is invalid.

Bottomline- the better camera and lens is the one that suits the photographer.  Asking which camera line is better is like arguing religion and cars.

Canon seems to make better point and shoot digital cameras, when compared to Nikon. However, both make extremely good DSLRs. As far as lenses go, the differences are minute. Both are well known for making outstanding lenses, as are Pentax, Sony, and Olympus Zukio. The biggest difference is that more people use Nikon and Canon, so they'll automatically say their equipment is better (even if they have not held another camera besides their own).



Between the two, Nikon seems to make a bit more sturdier camera, while both are top notch when it comes to image quality. The differences are almost completely gone when you get up to the 40D and D300.

I'll suggest that you go to a store and see how the cameras you're considering feel in your hands. After all, you'll likely be using it for 5 years or more.

well it's obvious if a user has that type of cameras, they'll tell u things like "oh yea! it's great!"

well i don't have neither of them, i have a Kodak, but I'll say..umm i guess cannon, i heard that cannon is a good brand!

Both Nikon and Canon make excellent cameras and lens but Canon is years years ahead in digital technology compared Nikon. Canon makes their own images sensors while Nikon has been relying on Sony to produce theirs.

Nikon users will choose Nikon... Canon users will choose Canon... I will choose Canon.

One has not been proven to be better than the other... both Nikon and Canon make great cameras and lenses!

That is the most wondering question of the photography world I think.And as other said one Canon user says 'Canon is better' and one Nikon users says 'Nikon is better.

I have Canon point and shoot and Nikon DSLR.Yes actually for point and shoot cameras Canon is better.But for DSLR I haven't used Canon so it is difficult to compare them but the thing I don't like about canon is its body.Canon DSLR bodies are just like toys(I am talking about D400 and D450).And also I think Nikon's body is more ergonomic.And that is the important thing for me because I think that I can shoot same photos with both canon and Nikon.So optically there are no big differences but one should consider the ergonomy and the body material before buying.
