Question:

Does Northern Ireland have a bank which issues bank notes?

In England we obviously have banknotes issued by the Bank of England, and occasionally you will see Scottish notes issued by either the Bank of Scotland, the Royal Bank of Scotland or Clydesdale Bank. But I've never seen a banknote with 'Bank of Northern Ireland' or something similar on it. Do folks in Northern Ireland use English/Scots notes only, or are there Northern Ireland notes but I've just never seen one?

Thanks in advance

  1. Yeah our money is made over here, By ulster bank, first trust, northern bank and bank of ireland, you will mostly see bank iof ireland notes over here.

  2. Yes NI does print it's own notes, they still have pound ones as well, 2 of which are worth a pint of guiness.

  3. Yes, There are 4 NI based banks which print and issue their own notes.

    Northern Bank

    Ulster Bank

    Bank of Ireland

    First Trust Bank

People bsed in England and Wales tend however not to accept the NI notes which is really annoying for us when we come over even though any bank in England will accept them as currency as they do say Sterling on them

  4. There are 4 banks that issue banknotes in Northern Ireland. They are:

    Ulster Bank

    First Trust Bank

    Northern Bank

    Bank of Ireland

It's the same as with Scottish bankotes really. You can spend them all over the UK, but Northern Irish ones are just much rarer than Scottish ones in England.

  5. Currently, four Northern Irish banks practice their right to issue pound sterling notes in Northern Ireland, with different series of denominations. Bank of Ireland issues notes from £5 to £50. First Trust Bank issues notes from £10 to £100, Northern Bank issues notes from £5 to £100, and Ulster Bank issues notes from £5 to £50.

Northern Bank and Ulster Bank are the only two banks that have issued commemorative notes so far. The only polymer banknote in the entire U.K. was issued by Northern Bank commemorating the new millennium.

Many places on the mainland, particularly in England won't accept Northern Ireland notes some believe wrongly however they are not legal tender outside of N.I.

  6. The following NI banks issue their own notes : Bank of Ireland, First Trust Bank, Northern Bank and Ulster Bank.

  7. There can be problems changing N.Ireland notes on your return to England.

I would be happy to take any surplus you might have.

  8. Yes it is fairly annoying when I come back from N. Ireland and try to spend N. Irish notes.  It is hard to resist the urge to punch the spotty teenager behind the counter when he says 'Sorry we don't accept euros' despite the clearly printed 'Pound Sterling' on the notes.  Evidently accepting english lessons was a struggle for him also.
