I am trying to decide on an SLR. Right now I am stuck on the Canon Rebel XT, but I just found this Olympus 510 and it looks to be a very nice camera. Any thoughts?

  1. i tried the 510

    i personally dont like it

try looking at a nikon d40

  2. My thought is stay with Nikon or Canon for SLRS.

  3. It is a good camera, but you should be aware of a few things:

    1) it a 4/3 system camera, so your lens choices are somewhat more limited than if you bought a Canon or Nikon.

    2) the 4/3 sensor is physically smaller than the sensors used in other digital SLRs, which means inherently more noise in the image.

    3)  Olympus has a very small share of the digital SLR market, which does not bode well for their long-term ability to stay in the market and support your camera.  Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony are the biggest players in the SLR market.

  4. the olympus e-510 is a good camera.

but if you have enough budget, go for canon XSI.

  5. I have an E-510 and an E-300 before that. Olympus is a camera company and makes great quality cameras. They compete very well against Nikon and Canon. It is not true that lenses are more limited, several companies make lenses for the 4/3 system, the lenses do tend to be a bit more expensive though. I have found the kit lens is great and covers almost all of my shooting. Olympus has made big improvements in noise reduction and according to the reviews and comparisons of the E-510, it compares with the current offering from Nikon and Canon. I really like the Olympus, it's smaller and lighter. That makes it better for carrying around. As for market share, Olympus is growing at a much faster rate than any other DSLR company. This means they will only become easier to find and more third party lenses and accessories will become available.
