Does PCM ECU ECM number on a replacement part have to much exactly on a 99 mercury cougar?

Lots of engine computers with different part numbers for this model, so trying to figure out how important that is. Thanks for your help!

  1. yes it does...but u may be able to have a non-mathching unit

    re-programmed to your model.
