  1. It is true, especially in foreign MNCs.

A PGDM is not a degree,it is only a Post Graduate Diploma in Management. And it is definitely not an MBA degree. Only the B-schools that offer them sell you with 'The course content is the same as a regular MBA, therefore it is equivalent to an MBA, if not rated higher than an MBA'. You cannot apply for M.Phil or Ph.D. / D.B.A. in Management if you have only a PGDM and not a real MBA. You can't even call yourself a post-graduate if you have only a PGDM and not an MBA.

Some middle level and senior level management positions are reserved for those who have a Masters' in Business Administration. A lot of foreign multinational companies don't understand how some post graduate diploma in management can be viewed as equivalent to an MBA. Even if their counterparts in India did, they would have a tough time convincing their foreign counterparts, so nobody usually takes the the effort to go through the trouble of explaining your diploma on your behalf. This might not only mean lesser promotions within your company, especially in the case of foreign MNCs, but also deny you chances to go abroad on foreign postings. As regards to changing jobs, corporate employers in India look not at the degree/diploma difference, but on the reputation of the B-school you went to. Foreign employers simply won't take a second look at your resume if you applied for a position that asks for an MBA.

And about the IIMs not offering MBAs, what they offer is Post Graduate Programs in Management or PGP-M, not PGDM / PGDBA / PGDBM. Plus, they say it is a great B-school, but I still don't know of any IIM grad who became CEO of any Forbes Global Fortune 500 company. And the IIMs have been around for some time now. But I know a lot of real MBA grads from globally lesser ranked B-schools who did.
