France gets these sudden downpours in summer. They usually don't last long.

I find it better to bring a thin rain jacket. Some can be rolled up and easily carried. Umbrellas are often awkward in summer tourist crowds. They also only give you one hand to carry anything (convenient for pickpockets ;)

Try to plan your visiting around the weather. If it's sunny, head for more outdoorsy attractions and save the museums for when the weather looks dodgy. You often get rain only in the morning or afternoon so expect it to change.
