  1. NO.

He can still reach #1 by  next week monday if he loses in the final AND Federer gets knocked out second round.

If Nadal wins, and Federer fails to make the SF, then Nadal will be number one.

Federer's lead is presently 300 points over Nadal.

If Nadal wins Cincy, then he picks up 500, and if Federer loses in the QF, he only gets 125. This will make Nadal the new #1.

If Nadal loses in the final, he gets 350 points. But if Federer loses in round 2, he only gets 35. This scenario will also make Nadal #1 by next week Monday.

NOTE also that the points from last year only get deleted on August 18 because of the calendar shift due to the olympics. Because of all the points Roger will lose then, it is just about certain that Nadal will be #1 on August 18. But as I stated above, he may become number 1 on August 4 if he reaches the Cincy finals and Federer does not do well.

  2. He doesn't have to if Federer loses before the quarters. He'll just have to make the final. If Roger makes the semis, he will have to win.  I don't think it will happen in this tournament as it is too tough to win both tourneys back-to-back. It is hot, humid and they are hardcourts. Even Roger couldn't do it in his heydays (or Djokovic last year). But I think the change of guard will officially happen at the Olympics and Nadal will be the No.1 seed for the US Open.

  3. Well if he wants to be number 1 straight after cincy he has to win at cincy and then Federer has to lose before the semis.

However, if there were no calendar changes because of the Olympics, he would only have to reach the quarters (or maybe semis) to become number 1, even if Federer won the title again.

So even if Federer wins and Rafa only reaches the quarters he could be the number 1 when ranking points come off 1 or 2 weeks after cincy.

  4. Nope, he has to win it to become #1. Which by  seeing him play recently might happen.
