Does Rickie Fowler really deserve 'Rookie of the year' award?
Rickie Fowler became the second youngest player in PGA history to win Rookie of the year award. Fowler, who is 21 and will turn 22 on Monday made his way up to number 26th on the world rankings and became second after Tiger Woods who won the award
when he was just twenty.
Many people however debate whether Rickie is truly worthy of this award or not. His looks and his young boyish charm apart, there were others who really shined in their first year on the PGA.
Even though Rickie didn’t really win a tournament this year, he had two second place finishes, one third, total seven top tens, 10 top 25's and of course the amazing performance at the Ryder Cup. The birdies Rickie posted in the Ryder Cup really made him
a star even though the American’s lost the grand event.
Also, his second place finish at the Memorial was applauding as he has changed from an amateur collegiate to a well polished professional golfer.
For many people Rory McIlroy was also a decent choice for this award. The world number one, Lee Westwood, thinks that Rickie shouldn’t have received the ‘Rookie of the year award’. Westwood though that it should have gone to McIlroy instead who won the Quail
Hollow Championship and finished third at both the PGA Championship and the British Open.
Considering how much he has achieved, Rory was a pretty strong candidate for the award. Westy even though that the PGA might have been biased against Rory since he chose the European Tour over PGA for 2011. The interesting thing however is that Rory himself
didn’t think that he should have gotten the honour. Even though this was his first year on the PGA, McIlroy wasn’t really a rookie to golf. He had already played three seasons on the European Tour, won a tournament and was in the top ten by the time he came
to the PGA.
"I really didn't want it. I'm not really a rookie," he said. "When I joined the TOUR I was in the top 10 in the World Ranking and Rickie has had an unbelievable season ... Rickie was just out of college, played the Walker Cup and that's what a rookie should
be."
Where two people compete, one always has to fail. Even though Fowler may not have achieved as much as McIlroy, he was a rookie and that too an amazing one and hence became the Rookie of the year for 2010.
