Does Russia want S. Ossetia to be independent or Georgia alone, or to re-unite with Russia?

Why does it care if it remains part of Georgia, or becomes an independent state? Either way, it will not reunite with N. Ossetia since that means it will voluntarily want to become part of Russia. So why does Russia care either way?
