McCain said, "She's the commander of the Alaska National Guard... She has been in charge, and she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities."
But as far as government goes, governors are only chief in regard to state units; and this only applies when the units are *not* involved in service. When units are deployed, they fall under the power of the federal government; thus they get their orders from the Department of Defense, not their governor. Also, "Alaska's national guard units have a total of about 4,200 personell, among the smallest of state guard organizations."
Did McCain mix up his facts or was he going somewhere else with that statement, and if so, what did he mean?
