Does Spain really have the East Winds like in the movie Volver.?

  1. I don't know the film Volver. But the coastal winds in the Med. part of Spain usually either blow from the West or the East. The East wind when it blows hard is called the Levante and it can blow very strong indeed, especially down towards Gibraltar. In fact for small boats it can be impossible to enter the Med. from the Atlantic when the Levante is blowing full force. The narrowing of the Straits causes the wind to accelerate as it exits the Med. (Venturi  effect). That is why there are so many people drowned each year as they attempt to cross over to Spain from North Africa; their boats just get swamped and overturned.
