Question:

Does Street Sense have the potential to be another Secretariat?

Street Sense streaked from 19th to 1st in yesterday's Kentucky Derby. He won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile by 10-lengths and the Tampa Bay Derby this Spring.

Does he have the potential to be another Secretariat or is that just wishful thinking?

  1. My favorite of all time was Seattle Slew.  Loved his physical appearance and attitude.  Won nine in a row, and that's a record that few will ever get close to.

Secretariat is a gem of a different color. He lost four out of seventeen races, and one is a dispute over interference with another horse.  There were races where he won so easily and shattered records, records that still stand...that I can see why most favor him over all others.

What we now have are few superior animals, and many good animals.  In the days of the two I mentioned, you had fewer horses, but many were great in their own way.

I like to compare the horses of forty years ago with the people of that time, and see where similarities exist when you compare them to today's breed.

We have many good looking people today, but few have the talent of generations ago.  Same holds true for the equines.

So, to answer your question, I don't see where Street Sense can do the same thing he did yesterday, in the next two events.

There will be other hurdles and other competition, and that could make this horse just another Kentucky Derby winner.

Having gone two seconds slower than Secretariat was impressive, but doing it two more times is asking a bit too much.

  2. well if you research the times street sencec has had the closest time EVER to secretariat so it is possiable, but i dont think he will ever beet the time:(

  3. h**l no! there will probably never be another secretariat. i'm srry! lol

but i'm just a Curlin fan and don't like Street Sense what so ever.  don't know y though

    :)

  4. Wishful thinking....

  5. Street Sense ran a monster race.  I think people get too hung up on the exact times of the races.  The track was fast at Churchill, but it had been sloppy the day before with all the rain.  Though they have good drainage there, I still think the track had to be influence by all the rain that had been in Louisville that weekend.  Still, another Secretariat is setting the bar awfully high.  I think he has a chance to win the Triple Crown if he has good racing luck, and if he pulls that off then we'll go from there.  Hard Spun deserves a lot of credit, though, he ran a great race before Street Sense blew by him and I thought he showed some hearet to still stay on task to hold second after front running the entire race.  Most horses would've given up at that point.

  6. If you mean a triple crown winner and a memorable horse, then possibly.    Unlike Secretariat, Street Sense's Derby time was not a record.  Secretariat's time still is.

It may just be wishfull thinking, but that's whats great about the sport - ever hopeful for the next great one!!

  7. Sorry, there will never be another Secretariat! He was so special, if he could never pass his genes along to his many offspring I just don't think we will ever see another one like him.

And I guarantee we will never see another Belmont won by 31 lengths!

  8. not quite.  but he might be able to do the 2 year old champ, 3 year old champ thing.  And he's got some shot at the Triple Crown.  If he wins another race, he'll probably be 3 year old Horse of the Year...  and winning both honorable titles is quite an achievement.  Even if Street Sense manages that, he's not as good as Secretariat.  Secretariat was just a monster animal...  he had really unbelievable speed and talent.  We'll never see a 30 length victory again.  So many horses nowadays are very talented.  Secretariat faced a 13 horse Kentucky Derby field and nowadays there's almost always 20 horses.  Everyone now faces very tough competition, which makes the Triple Crown very difficult to win.  No doubt, Secretariat could have still won...  but it'll be rare to find a horse to win it today.

You're lucky.  I wish I was alive to see Secretariat...  or even Seattle Slew or Affirmed...  and it really would have been great to see Ruffian.  At least I had the honor of seeing Barbaro.

I hope Street Sense wins the Preakness.  Even if we don't get a Triple Crown winner, it's nice when we can keep the hope into the Belmont.  Whatever happens, it can't be as bad as last year.

  9. Not a chance in h**l. A whole bunch of mediocre horses in the Derby this year. Compare times as well, not even in the same ballpark. Big Red would have crushed him by an easy 10 lengths.
