Does Sydney's coastal weather reach the Canterbury-Bankstown area?

Also, anyone know how far from the coast this area is in? If coastal weather does reach this area, then how come there are variations in temperature? For example, during the day it can be a few degrees hotter and at night, a few degrees cooler.

  1. Canterbury-Bankstown is around 20 km from the coast. It's a bit to far west to prevent  variations in temperature. I use to live in West Ryde (approx 15km from coast) and would have frost on the lawn in winter and cook to death in summer.

I now live on the coast (northern beaches) and never have seen frost on the lawn. Still get hot but not as hot as West Ryde.

  2. The seabreeze does get into Canterbury and Bankstown but well after it starts on the coast. When I worked at Bankstown Airport we would see the sea breeze around 3-4pm which meant it got a lot hotter there than it did on the coast where the seabreeze comes in aroud 9-10am. On days with strong westerly or northwesterly winds, the seabreeze won't get in that far and it can get very hot in western Sydney.

In winter, the modifying effects of the warmer ocean prevent frosts in the coastal suburbs but not in western Sydney.  This meams that it is hotter in summer and colder in winter in Canterbury-Bankstown than it is on the coast but there is often a late afternoon seabreeze on summer days to cool things down.

  3. I would guess about 15 km from the coast, as the sea breeze blows.  Coastal weather does not get that far inland which is why the temperatures are more extreme.
