Lately I've been having a lot of emotional problems. Life gets stressful sometimes and I feel like certain things are catching up with me which is causing depression, anxiety, and sadness among other emotions and its been persisting for months now.

Has therapy helped anyone or is it just a waste of money? I have friends that I can tell things to, but they can't TREAT my problems...

  1. Therapy is wonderful. if life is getting too tough for you, honestly, try checking yourself into a Psychiatric Hostpital. They work wonders, give you a break from the stresses of life, and are alot of fun (in my expireience)

  2. It hasn't really helped me, mostly because I can open up to my husband about more than my therapist. But I go anyway with the hope that it might do some good...all it does is make me cry after each session.

  3. It depends on on why you are depressed and anxious.  It is important to try therapy long-term at least a couple times, because a lot of people will go to two sessions, dislike it, and say therapy doesnt' work for them.

Still, in all my experience with therapy (and sadly it is A LOT of experience), it has only offered me minor benefits.

  4. yes Therapy does help

  5. yes therapy has helped me a great deal. The therapist will hear you out and not become annoyed at hearing your problems as friends can. They help you rationalize your thinking and help you recongize patterns in flawed thinking. I noticed a slight difference after about 4 sessions, and a big difference after about 8.

I compare therapy to walking on a broken ankle. You don't know it's broken until the doctor shows you. Then you know what you need to do to let it heal and to fix it. Once it starts healing you notice things in life getting better...things that had nothing to do with your broken ankle. It's the same with therapy. It improves all areas of your life once you recognize the problem.

It takes work on your part though...its a two way street.

  6. Much of therapy is about the relationship you have with the therapist.  If the fit isn't right, the treatment won't be so great.  Look for an experienced therapist that your instincts say you can respect and trust.  The first appt is yours to interview.  If you don't click, move on.  Same holds after the first couple appts.  Once you do find someone, plan on sticking with if for 6-12 months to really work thru issues.  Some bail to early when there's either a lull or it gets difficult.  Therapy isn't exactly an easy thing, but it's results can be very rewarding if you stick with it.  You'll also find that it's nice to have a place where you can talk about anything, including whatever is currently bugging you which can spare your family some complaints about work/whatever (i.e. side benefit).

Yes, with the right therapist, therapy has helped me.
