  1. Not really. In the past two Olympics, the US has had 35 and 37 golds. As of yesterday, China already had 35. Even when the US hosted in 1996, they had 44 golds. China will be close to that number. I think that the US will have a similar number as the last two, around 35-39.

  2. SO I DID A LITTLE EXCEL WORK ON THE MEDAL COUNTS

I DONT KNOW WHAT EVENTS ARE LEFT THOUGH

In 2004: 305 Gold Medals awarded

The U.S. won only 35 there, lower than what China already has

so far in 2008 there have been 185 G awarded

Plenty of Gold to go, but i don't know for what events

^^^^^^All the medals are not worth the same

the IOC orders countries by Most Gold medals

it has only been 3 times, i think, that the Country with the most Gold medals didn't also lead in total medals

  3. Doubtful

  4. Yeah its stil possible but doesn't really matter since all medals are worth the same

  5. The odds aren't looking very good.  Oddschecker has China listed at 2-5 odds, or 71.4% chance, to win the most gold medals, but they haven't updated in a long time and I think the odds have shortened.  China starts the day with 39 and the U.S. with 22.  This includes 8 gold medals from Phelps, although two of them were team efforts, and they are losing gold medals from a few athletics events they usually win, such as the 100m or 200m dash.  They potentially could end up with less gold medals than in Athens, in which case they won 35 gold medals.  China is looking to reach the 50 gold medal mark, and if they hit it, it's virtually impossible for the U.S. to catch up.

But it really doesn't matter since not all gold medals are created equal.  As much work as Phelps has done, there is no way he has done 8 times the work of the entire U.S. basketball team.  Then there's no way his 8 gold medals should count 8 times as much as the U.S. basketball team's 1 gold medal.
