I am a US Permanent Resident (Green card holder) and a citizen of Bangladesh. I will be travelling to Florence, Italy this January for study purposes. Will I need a visa to travel to Italy or will my green card allow me to enter without a visa?

  1. Firstly, with regard to a Bangladeshi passport holder; you need a visa before you can enter Italy.

Secondly, with regard to you as being a Green card holder; it is a different story.  If you want to travel outside the US, your passport of your citizenship is normally needed.  To re-enter the US, your green card is shown.

Therefore, if you want to go to Italy, what the Italian immigration will be looking from you is an Italian visa on your Bangladeshi passport.

And when you go back to the US, the US immigration will be looking for your green card.

  2. Most definitely.

If your stay is less than 90 days, you apply for a Schengen Visa. This will permit you to travel within the entire EU, not just Italy.

If longer, see the Italian consulate for specific requirements.

  3. The others are correct, you do need a visa.

This is the visa site publshed by the Italian ministry responsible for visas: http://www.esteri.it/visti/index_eng.asp... It will tell you whether you need a visa, exactly what you need to provide with the application, and where to apply.
