Question:

Does Using Multiple Fans Instead of Central Air Really Save Money?

I live in a 1 b/r apartment (approx. 850 sq. ft.)

I have 3 good sized fans all running on high to keep the air circulating and somewhat cool.

With them running most of the day and evening on high, wouldn't they be drawing a good amount of electricity?

And just be better off letting my central air turn on and off when it hits a certain temperature?

  1. Fan ARE cheaper than window units but AC is your best bet if it's central.

You can cover the vents in the rooms you don't use & keep your thermostat around 76 degrees. Ceiling fans (or maybe 1 other floor fan set on low) will help distribute the air.

Keep your drapes drawn & make sure you don't feel warm air around your doors & windows. If you do.... you can get weather stripping for $3 at any WalMart.

  2. Ziggy..fans are cheaper by all means. A/C will make the house cooler but it costs more.

  3. Ceiling fans only move the air, do not cool. When you are in a room with the fan going, the movement of air gives a cooling feeling, but temp. is not lowered. Fan motors consume much electricity...so, I would say it's almost a tradeoff. with 3 going on high!

To conserve, turn fans off when not in a room, and run them on med. or low, not high.

  4. yes

  5. YES!  we live in south Georgia and run our ceiling fan 24/7/365!!!!!  It circulates the cool air in the summer and the heated air in the winter.
