  4. Vietnam is one of the few countries that doesn't recognize international driving permits. I found this out when I flashed my U.S. International driver permit in hopes to rent a car there. I was met with either laughter or strange looks when I asked where the Avis car rental counter was the last time I was at Tan Son Nhat International.  

    There's probably good reason why Vietnam doesn't recognize international permits. Traffic laws (or the lack of traffic laws) in Vietnam are considerably different than in other parts of the world. ex. Americans drive on the RIGHT side of the road. Australians drive on the LEFT. Vietnamese drive on BOTH sides of the road.

    You are supposed to have a permit to ride motorbikes in Vietnam, but the Viet police usually lay off the tourists and expats with that stuff.
