We are his competitors on the world stage. He would have to be insane to like us too much, and he'd have to be a complete dupe to trust us.

I love the US, but we play hard, and a lot of times it has been our policy to manipulate our competitors to our own advantage.

Vladimir Putin dislikes and does not trust the US and UK because both had reneged on its agreement regarding nuclear arms build-up and non-interference in other countries.

Putin is a very powerful and intelligent man who can see the future of the US and its need for oil.  He is very patriotic and protective of his country and he is a control freak as well, and paranoid from his past in the KGB.  I don't think the US and UK have given him anything to like in the past few years with our foreign policy.  He knows that the US took over Afghanistan so they could siphon oil out of areas close, too close to Putin's Russia.  He will not stand for it as we can see by the fact that he will not relinquish his power after two terms in office.

I don't think any national leader can afford to trust any other sovereign.  You can maintain relationships through the use of political diplomacy depending on your objectives but why should any one really trust each other?

Russia has huge oil and mineral resources, it is the largest country by area in the world but its population is dwindling.  The US has been trying very hard to set military bases in the Eastern Europe and is befriending Poland and Ukraine.  Thus political pressures rise.

However much we would like to deny it, the world is getting overpopulated and its dependence on finite resources is growing. With $1B people in tiny neighboring China Russia needs to stay alert, because there are many who would like to have that land to themselves.

Putin is quite correct not to trust the USA, they are merciless bullies of small nations and treacherous friends at the best of times - they follow ruthless self interest at all times.

He then puts the UK in the same basket as the USA for home electioneering purposes. Russians still distrust the west and Putin plays on this, building up a patriotism that is a strong Russian characteristic.

He knows full well the UK is no threat, except as an ally of the USA, but no votes to be had saying so!

President Bush always talks about his buddy Vladimir, so the fact that he doesn't trust us doesn't mean he doesn't like us.  But has the US or UK ever done anything for Russia that would encourage trust?  

Would you trust people who try to put troops and missiles in every country around your border?
