Or does it need hi speed internet to work? Because we are planning on having Vonage as our phone service, and dial-up as our internet. Is this possible?

  1. Yes, I have it and let me tell you! There are times you can hear other conversations going on, it's like your on a party line.  And there is static and fee back.   The cool part is that I have all my voice messages sent to me on line to my email address and you can pull them off your regular voice mail.

  2. you will need high-speed Internet!

you can have cable, DSL or wifi like clearwire.com.....

you can use earthlink.net or AT&T any ISP that services your area!!

yes....I would go with MajciJack too!!

before you try any other VoIP, see if you like it!

its a pain-in -the-neck to cancel Vonage ( high canellation fees) and you will not get your phone number ported back!

  3. Vonage does require high speed internet. It wont care whether

it is wireless or not. There is no way of getting around having

high speed internet. If you are looking to save money your best

bet will be some kind of high speed internet and magicjack. I'm

not a magicjack pimp (like the fella above), but it is a way to

    save money.

  4. For reliable voip service, you do need highspeed Internet connectiion.  It can be cable, DSL, or wireless.  This is true for any VoIP home-phone service, not just Vonage.

Typically, you will need 1Mbps speed, or higher.

That said, in the past I have used Lite Speed Internet with my VoIP services.  Lite Speed is typically around 256 Kbps speed.  It isn't optimal, but it is functional.

That said, it is "possible" to use VoIP over dial-up Internet.

It just depends on what your expectations are.

With dial-up Voip, you are generally limited to PC-based services that run a softphone on your PC.

It will not be high quality voice calling and cannot be considered as a home-phone replacement service (no e911).  But, it can be used as a long distance calling alternative.

For example, I have used GoogleTalk for making PC-to-PC Voice calls.  GoogleTalk has surprisingly good quality, even over dial-up... I have used it that way in the past.

For PC-Phone LD calling, I have used a service called PcCall - http://www.pccall.com/

They claim to work with a connection as low as 28.8 Kbps dial-up.  They provide a free preconfigured softphone for use on your PC.

Efonica is another service that claims to work over dial-up service with connection speeds as low as 28.8 Kbps - http://www.efonica.com

I sometimes use them on my highspeed connection and their voice quality is very good.  They provide a free preconfigured softphone for use on your PC.

Voice quality and bandwidth is mostly dependant on the "CODEC" used by the VSP (VoIP Service Provider).  The highest quality codec is G.711 and requires highspeed Inernet to use.

VSP's that cater to low bandwithd customers over dial-up use high compression Codecs that can get by with Internet speeds between 30 - 56 Kbps.  These services generally use GSM or G.729 Codecs.

Some home-phone quality VSP's allow you to configure your own VoIP quality settings.  In otherwords, you can set your service to use optionaly, G.711 for high quality calls, or set your account to use G.729 for good quality calls at low bandwidth.

The home phone service providers I use allow me to do this.

For example, I do this with VSP's like CallCentric, InPhonex, Les.net and VoIP.ms.

If a person had a configurable softphone like the 3CX VoIP Client, WengoPhone, the NCH ExpressTalk, or Counterpaths EyeBeam softphone,  they could configure it to use the GSM (or G.729a in the case of EyeBeam) codec and then be able to connect over dial-up.  CallCentric, InPhonex, Les.net all support the GSM and G.729a codec for low-bandwidth connections.
