Question:

Does Your Child's Homework Make You Feel Dumb?

My fourth-grader was having difficulty with her math homework this evening....to help her I had to read, and re-read the question....look back through her textbook to even have a slight understanding of how to arrive at an answer. Math never was a strong subject for me...but wow...She is going to need a tutor by the middle of the school year.

  1. Yes some of it does because it's totally different since I was in school. I'm not that old I'm 28 but some of it just stumps me. And of course they think I should know all the answers and I don't...

  2. You shouldn't think she will need a tutor. You should be claiming that she will be the one doing the tutoring.

What your daughter need now is a parent inside of the classroom during mat class. You will be learning with her and seeing how she is being taught. You will also be able to help other children

Do not outsource her education. The school is a resource.

  3. Lol, that's funny.  Just tell yourself that it's been well over 10-20 odd years since you were in elementary, so it's understandable if you don't get or "forgot" how to do the math problems.  :]

  4. My mom couldn't help me on my homework by the time I was in 8th grade. At that point, my Uncle had to help me with trigonometry. Remember that there are always homework hotlines and even online forums that can help your child. You don't have to put a second mortgage on the house to get a perosnal tutor at a place like sylvan.

  5. MAYBE YOU ARE DUMB

    FOURTH GRADE HA HA

    1+1=2

  6. You always have Yahoo answers for those tough questions :).  I've found that there are many people more than willing to assist with hard math questions - even though I am in high school!  My parents don't have a clue when I babble on about the psychology of memory or calculus...just wait until you have to deal with that really advanced stuff!

  7. I just graduated with a pretty good record. I sincerely hope this doesn't happen to me =o.

  8. Don't worry-- my mom has a masters and she couldn't help me with math anymore around the 6th grade. We are teaching our kids more and more advanced math at earlier and earlier ages. Not only that, but they change the methods too. I tried to help my brother with a quadratic equation-based worksheet, but they did it in such a strange way, I couldn't help him. She should have no problem keeping up-- I managed to do OK even without parent's help in math.

Also, it's easy to forget the basics! When I took calc I had no problem with it, but helping my brother with factoring equations took some review.
