an article that the House is trying to pass a law that you need to take a test first and then you get your learner's permit.

Here is the article on the House trying to pass it- http://www.unionleader.com/article.aspx?articleId=e20f3448-f1f3-494e-af4d-655d20ed4ebd&headline=State+House+Dome%3A+Bill+calls+for+more+rules+for+teen+drivers

  1. Listen to the DMV, not people here.  No you do not need a learner's permit to start to drive in NH, just be 15 1/2.  You have to be with a licensed adult to do so.

A bill is just a bill, not the law, yet.  It is still best for you to pass a written test and have a permit to start to drive, so you know the basic laws of the road before you get on the road so you do not break the laws for a possible ticket, or worse, an accident.

It is a good law.  So, I hope it passes, for the sake of everyone in NH.

  2. Everybody (outside NH) needs to get a learner's permit FIRST.  Apparently NH, it is still only a BILL (not a law yet).

The only question is the age.  Some states allow teens to start at 15, 15.5, or 16 yo.  This is the law of the land.  The basic steps are:

    (1) go to DMV and pick up driver manual

    (2) study

    (3) go back and take the written test - pass

    (4) with the learner's permit practice driving

    (5) you might have to take the 5 hour class

    (6) take the road test - pass

    (7) be happy.

At any time after step 3, you can decide to take Driver's Ed from school so that you can get full license at 17 (instead of just waiting so that your junior license turns into full license at 18).

    Good Luck...

  3. If you are under 18, you must take a DMV-approved NH drivers education course in order to be eligible for the New Hampshire drivers license. Online courses do not satisfy this requirement.

  4. OK,most of the answers above are correct but if you put them all together this is what you need:

In NH you have to be 15 1/5 in order to start driving with a sober licensed adult over 25.  You are also required to get 20 hours of logged driving time and have to take driver's ed.

If you are 18 or over, you do not have to take driver's ed but before you get your license you can drive with an adult over 25 as well.  Just remember, you are driving on THEIR license and insurance.  You can then go to the DMV and take the written and driving test.

Being 15 1/5  I would suggest you take Drivier's Ed through your school when it is offered.  It's expensive but when you get insurance, you get a better price because they give you a driver's education discount.
