  1. First let me say I loved my 16 gauge when I had one. The 16 gauge in a hunting load was only slightly less recoil and I never seen a pheasant or rabbit that could tell the difference when I shot it. You could load a 12 gauge as light as a 16 so it won't kill your shoulder so really there is no difference there either. If you wanted an improvement in recoil you would have to drop down to a 20 gauge but then you have to be a little bit more on target with your shots.

  2. No not really.*

  3. it will be less than a 12 gauge

  4. Recoil is affected by two things.

First is the cartridge (or in this case, shell) fired.  The more gunpowder used, and the more shot propelled, the heavier the recoil.

Second is the gun.  Heavier guns absorb more recoil.  Semi-automatics absorb recoil to operate the action.  And you can add recoil-absorbing stocks.

So, if you used the same load in each gun, say 3/4 dr. eq. of powder pushing 1 ounce of shot, and the guns were the same weight and action, then the recoil between a 16 and 12 gauge would be identical.

That being said, the "standard" loads for 16 gauge are lighter than the "standard" loads for 12 gauge.  So, unless you're buying some heavy hunting or self-defense loads, the 16 gauge will kick a bit less.

Be ready for an unpleasant surprise at the ammo store, though.  16 gauge ammo is noticeably more expensive than 12 or 20 gauge, due to its limited popularity.  If you really enjoy shooting it, you may want to investigate loading your own.

  5. nope, you'll be just fine, and it is good for shooting trap. should you find the recoil is too much for you, they make a rubber recoil pad for the buttstock.

  6. It has less energy than a twelve gauge but the amount of recoil you feel depends on how heavy the gun is.  You will probably feel less unless it is very light and or you are used to shooting a heavy twelve gauge.
