Does a CalTrain monthly pass work as a transfer on the San Jose VTA Lightrail?

I need to use lightrail to get to CalTrain. Do I need to purchase a separate monthly pass from VTA to use the lightrail? I can't find evidence of this on the VTA site, but this morning I watched someone flash their CalTrain monthly when asked to show their ticket. Anyone have experience with this?
