Does a Canadian Citizen Need a passport to enter Canada by land?

My immigration green card process has take too long and I'm out of money. Me & my children need to return to Canada but we do not have passports.

Does anyone know if you can cross to Canada with a California DL and a Canadian birth certificate? Can my US-born kids cross with US birth certs?

I appreciate your help & answers!

  1. Entering Canada by land as a Canadian, no problem.

  2. I think so, I'm not 100% though.  If you have a birth certificate, it should be fine... might just take longer.

  3. No, you won't need a passport, but you will need your birth certificate and a government issued photo ID such as a driver's license.  You will need your children's birth certificates.  If your children's father is named on their birth certificates and he is not travelling with you, that may be a problem.  You should have a letter from him giving permission for the children to leave the country, especially if he is a US citizen.  The letter should include his contact information in case the border officials decide to call him to  make sure it is ok.  Here is a link to the Canadian Border Services Agency, with contact information.  Call them and ask about the California driver's license.  I don't think it is a problem, but I am not sure about that one.  If there is a Canadian consulate in your area go there and ask for advice.  There is one in Los Angeles.  I've included the link with the addresses and contact information for the consulates as well.
