I was at Sports Authority recently, and the sales associate was trying to tell me that this Tommy Armour Cubehead driver was really a great driver for a beginner. My drive deffinatly needs improvement is this really a good idea for me to invest in? It is about $100. If anybody can refer me to a good source to find info or give me some useful info please do.

  1. The only way that a cube-headed, or square head driver will help you is on miss hits. The squareness of the head keeps the head more stable on hits that don't strike the center of the clubface. Therefore, if you have a slice now, you will still have a slice with this new driver. But since you are a beginner, I'm pretty sure that you don't hit every ball on the middle of the clubface, so a cube driver would improve your distance and accuracy on miss hits. But still, whatever swing flaws you have, slice, hook, whatever, that will still persist.

  2. nope

  3. With the cube heads (and indeed, with all of the new non-traditional head shapes), its all about "moment of inertia" , or MOI. That's a measure of the clubhead's resistance to twisting.

A high MOI is achieved by moving more weight to the perimeter of the golf club -- thus, the square head. The square shape allows more weight to the outside than a pear-shaped one.

Perimeter weighting will help you on off-center hits, improving both distance and accuracy. It's the same reason for the cavity back in cavity back irons. More weight on the perimeter  -- more accuracy.

So given all of that, it's entirely possible that you can improve your driving with a square driver.

But my recommendation is to save the money and invest it in a lesson or two.

  4. not really, if you suck, you will still suck
