Thanks for quick answers??? I know that GPS technology itself works, I was asking specifically about the "auto" units which give turn by turn directions and street names.....Really just curious, I use mine all the time for fun, and was just wondering......Thanks Ken

  1. Yes it does work but just as in the US there are some spots that it doesn't work

  2. I went to Hawaii last summer and we brought our Garmin GPS and it worked great!  It did give turn by turn and street names, so I'm sure it will work in St. Thomas.

  3. Mine has those, however I think my dad ordered some extra maps when he got it so I would say specifically check yours.

Just try to get directions to a place and see if shows up when you zoom out.  Then zoom in to the end point.  That would help right?

  4. Definitely.  We use Garmin brand GPS' all the time where I work.  Keep in mind though if you're looking at one of those car navigation systems like TomTom, those won't work here.  Keep in mind that GPS stands for Global Positioning System so you can find your coordinates anywhere in the world.  You'll even get a 2 dimensional map to go along with it.  What you won't get in the USVI is things like street names, driving directions and landmark information.

    *update*

Sorry, the GPS' that offer the turn by turn directions don't work here at the moment.  I know a few auto makers have been doing pilot studies to implement the technology but there still doing the street mapping.
