Question:

Does a Stator recharge the battery

I just bought a used motorcycle, and when I looked at it it started right up everytime. I got it home (last night) and went to start it today but the battery had almost no charge. I'm guessing the battery is bad, but isn't there something (like an alternator on a car) that recharges the battery while you ride? The bike is a 1986 and the battery isn't new but also not original.

  1. The stator is the stationary part of the alternator.

Pull the battery from the bike and give it a full charge.

If it takes and holds a charge, put it back in.

Then, with the aid of a manual and a meter, it's a simple matter to test the alternator.

  2. yes, a generator or like is used on a bike.

  3. A stator is part of the charging system. What make and model? Different bikes use different charging systems. I could probably help troubleshoot if I knew make and model. First charge and then load test battery. Second , check dc volt/ amp output at battery. Third, check ac output at altenator (stator). If you have no increase in voltage at the battery, but proper ac voltage from the altenator, then reg/rect probably needs replacing. If battery fails load test/ replace battery.

  4. Check on the lower left front of the engine. The regulater wire plugs into the stator there, some times it becomes unplugged and you lose the charging ability.
