Question:

Does a TV built after 2004 need a digital converter box? ?

My tv is a 20" Sanyo LCD built in 2006 - I use an antenna which says HDTV on the box...... now I do not if I should purchase a converter box becuase I heard tvs that are manufactured after 2004 don't need one?

Please help!!

  1. If you can tune in the sub channels (IE 3.2, etc), then you are already receiving the Digital broadcast.  Tune in to your local PBS or ION station to find sub channels.

  3. I'm 99% sure you will need a converter box.

    Digital tuners were required on all TVs manufactured for the US market after 2/2007.

    While some TVs that were made before then had digital tuners, a low end TV like a 20" Sanyo is unlikely to have one.

    To be sure, look in your TV's menu or user's  manual. If it has a digital tuner, there will be a way to scan for digital antenna signals. Also, if the TV has a digital tuner it will be listed as an "ATSC tuner" in the specs.

    In North America, all TV antennas are "HDTV antennas". The label is just marketing hype. even if the antenna was 30 years old it would still be a "HDTV antenna".

    I have and recommend the Zenith/Insignia converter. Connect it between your antenna and your Sanyo.
