I know the official stance is "yes" but I've heard mixed personal experiences. I've been there quite a few times with just my California Driver's License but that was over a year ago and I hear things have changed.

  1. Yes you do need a passport.

You can use your passport card (looks like a credit card) to travel to Mexico and Canada over land (no flights).

  2. Right now take your license and a copy of your birth certificate. June 1, 2009 you will need a passport or a passport card to re-enter the US by land from Canada or Mexico. Right now the law only applies to air and sea (cruise ship) travel.

The passport card is best if you will only be driving, walking or bussing from the US into Mexico and back again. If you are going to fly or travel to other countries outside Canada and Mexico, get a passport.

Have a good time in TJ!

  3. The date is June 1st 2009 when you WILL need a passport or the Passport Card.  See the link below to read about the Passport Card--it's cheaper rhan a passport.

  4. You dont really need the passport to go to TJ, but you need it to be back in the US
