Does a US citizen need a passport to enter canada, and re-enter the US?

I'm a Canadian, but if an American was to come to Canada and then go back home, would he need a passport?

Valerie is right, I cross all the time. You didn't even need a b/c until the end of this past Jan. Eventully though, we will need a passport, maybe by this summer. Same is true for the Mexican border, another border I cross frequently.

Yes we need a passport for when we leave the U.S.

No. All you need is government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. Please check out the website below.
