I can get a free Playstation with a new Sony FHD LCD or a free Samsung Blue-Ray player with a Samsung FHD LCD. Which would be better for upscaling my large collection of old DVD films to 1080P?

  1. First, I'm not a fan of up-scaling as you are taking 1940's video technology and "magnifying" to fake a higher resolution image.

But the PS3 will likely do a better job than other players.

It takes a lot of time, software and processing power to up-scale video in real time. The "cell processors" in the PS3 are a huge engine for this work.  This is why the PS3 with a BluRay disk usually produces better images than stand alone players.

My advice would be the PS3/Sony LCD combo as being a better chance of a superior up-scaling.

  2. The PS3 is a very good upscaler, you can even set how you want it to upscale regular dvd's.

I do however recommend Toshiba TV over Sony tv's

  3. The PS3 has a Blue-Ray player built in, but it just like all diffrent brands, they have diffrent qualitys and things like that, (like how sharp TV's just suck) And the PS3 can play games.

  4. is depend on how u connect.

If let say u connect a playstation to Song LCD TV, m ostly like the cable you going to use is HDMI, but it does not mean that you can get up to 1080P. It also have to depend on the disc itself whether the image can go up to that resolution.

Same as Samsung FHD TV and Blu-Ray.
