Does a broadband router replace a modem?

Hi,

I know that a modem connects to the internet and a router allows multiple PCs to connect

I'm wanting to set up a home wireless network and I was wondering if a router replaces the need for a modem

It might be a stupid question and any help would be appreciated

  1. A router takes an outside connection and opens it as a gateway for peers connected to the router's USB/wifi interfaces. In the case of a broadband router, it routes PPP data (broadband) to the LAN network, and vice versa.

So, in theory, unless the router you're buying is really, really cheap and doesn't have LAN facilities, yes, it replaces the need for both a modem and a hub/switch.

  2. Not all wireless routers you see in stores will replace a modem.  Make sure the box specifically says it is a modem AND a wireless router AND whether it supports DSL or cable.  You may also want to ask your ISP if they can provide you with one.  Both Verizon and Time Warner Cable rent all-in-one units.

  3. i will assume that you already have a modem from your Internet Service Provider and you want to connect multiple PCs at same time using another device called router

    thats possible

but a router does not necessarily replace your modem

you can connect the router to your modem

    like:

    modem>>router>>pc1,pc2 and so on

if you plan to connect another router to that router then thats possible as well

usually a home router has 4 slots max for PCs and the 5th slot would be the slot in which the RJ45 wire or Cat5e wire(internet wire) coming from your modem will be connected to. if theres a label WAN or Internet on the slot then thats the slot which should receive the wire coming from the modem

if your router is a modem router(modem and router at same time) recommeded by your ISP then its possible to replace your modem as well

but usually we dont replace modems when we use routers

we just connect the router to the modem

you can check your ISP just to make sure of that

and by the way this is not a stupid question Ü
