Does a california landlord have to pay interest to a tenant on the security deposit? and how much?

  1. In all states a security deposit is supposed to be held in an interest bearing savings account. The interest usually isn't much because most of those accounts pay less than 1.25%


  2. not even! I have never heard of that in California.  Many times the tenants pull the old. " I am using my deposit as my last months rent" scam!

  3. Check your landlord tenant law for Cal.

    But in Oregon it is illegal to use an intrest bering account. Here it has to be a regular client trust acount and no intrest.
