Question:

Does a car's auxillary input drain the car battery?

I just got a new car last week with an auxillary input, and I bought a auxilary cable today to plug my ipod into it. I was just wondering if keeping the auxilary input cable plugged into the auxilary input will drain the car's battery? I know that it would for a regular cigarette lighter...but I wasn't too sure about this one. Anyone have any ideas?

  1. MOST auxillary inputs are nothing more than an input, they do not consume power, they are for receiving sound signals and should not drain your battery UNLESS they are the type that charge your ipod\mp3 player.

    The type that charges your ipod\mp3 WILL drain your battery

  2. I have a yaris and I keep mine plugged in all the time. as long as you don't keep the ipod on all the time everything will be fine. the guy above me doesn't know what he is talking about.

  3. What do you mean "auxilary input"?  Do you mean an audio input for your stereo? If it's a standard mini-stereo jack, that won't drain the battery at all.  If it's a special iPod connector that charges the iPod, then yes, it will use a tiny trickle of power -- don't leave it hooked up for a month or more without using your car.  Overnight or even some days won't drain enough to drain your battery though.

    However, if you turn on the electrical system to listen to your iPod through the stereo, without running the car, then yes, that will drain the battery -- but that's due to powering up the electrical system, not connecting something to an input port.

  4. They are two of the same.

    Yes, it will create a drain during the time you use it but,

    I wouldn't worry about an ipod at all. Maybe if you using for

    a few days and don't intend on driving the car..

    A coffee warmer, a fan, a high power searchlight  or something with some heavy draw yes.

    ipod =  no...

    Enjoy your new car......don't leave that I pod in the aux outlet because someone could break into the car to steal it...

    Good luck..

  5. Yes it is electrical and is part of the car.

  6. i work in best buy car audio and i get this question all the time and no it does not take power out of ur car battery but it does take out a minimul amount of power from your ipod because its like having headphones attached to your ipod and the ipod is using power to run the effects through the rca wire just like with headphones.
