Does a cardiologist perform surgery? (or anything of that sort?)?

no actually apparently a cardiologist does not do heart surgery...

  1. Open heart surgery is done by cardiothoracic surgeons, not cardiologists.

    Interventional cardiologists do coronary angiograms, angioplasties, and place stents. There are some cutting-edge valvuloplasty techniques that they are starting to do, but it's still all done through catheters.

    Right now, the only time cardiologists slice open skin is when they are implanting a pacemaker.


  2. In the context of surgery, i.e. treatment via anatomic manipulation, sure endovascular techniques have made "minimally invasive" surgical procedures possible.  Invasive cardios are not considered surgeons per se, but in the modern era, much of this is semantic differences.

    Invasive cardios don't make a habit of making large incisions in the patient's skin (outside of implanting pacers, etc.)  or doing large fascial dissections, thoracotomies, so in that sense, I suppose if that's what you're looking for, you're not gonna see much of that in Invasive Cardio.
