Our son has recently obtained his learners permit license and my wife and I disagree that he needs to have insurance, CA state law indicates all drivers must have insurance.

  1. Yes, he needs to be added to your policy as soon as he's able to get behind the wheel.

The sooner you add him the sooner that first 3 years of high premiums is over.

  2. every car that is on the road should have it so yes he needs it but if you have it on your car already then just add him as driver... if he has own car then yes that needs it also

  3. Well, that's true, all drivers need insurance.  But with a learners permit, he isn't a driver yet, he's a learner and will never be driving without someone in the front seat with him ready to take over if there is a problem.  You won't need to add him to your insurance until such time as he can take your car alone (scary thought I know).  So once he gets a license, then yes, he will need to be insured, but not until then.  So if you were the one thinking he needs it now, tell her she was right.

  4. Check with your insurance agent to make sure what has to be done so he is covered while driving your vehicle(s). Used to be that permit drivers were covered automatically, but now the companies want every cent they can charge. I have State Farm and no one under 25 can drive my trucks.
