  1. you can go either way. If you don't have a heater, make sure you don't overfeed him or the water will get stinky and cloudy and he could die of lack of oxygen.

I've kept them both ways, they are fascinating and live for years!

It's pretty easy and cheap to set up a tank with a filter but be warned, they are escape artists and will climb up any tubing, or cords and get out if they can find a space...so that it a reason to NOT use a filter, and keep the water level a few inches below the top so it can't climb out.

they are great hunters, fishers, and housekeepers. I've seen mine sit at the "door" of his flowerpot and nab brine shrimp swimming in the water. They also love to dig in gravel and move it all around, so use good sized gravel, it keeps them busy.

    have fun

  2. Not necessarily, you actually shouldn't have one.  All you need is the water from the creek or river that they came from, and get another big  bucket for refills.  online you can look up things to feed it.

  3. you should not need a filter because these gys eat algea and small fish, insects, and other living creatures it can fit in its mouth.  they are also scavengers so catfish foods might work.

if you want to feed it feeder fish get small rosy red minows and give him a tall(by tall i mean just sticking out of the water) plant that is sturdy enough for him to climb on because crawfish sometimes climb up them to catch prey.  i got off topic. well you will not need a filter and if you do get one it should not be a strong one you should just use water from where you got it unless you got it from a pet store then use dechlorinated water.  DO NOT HAV FISH THAT MIGHT BE ABLE TO EAT HIM that is what happened to all the crawfish in my pond.
