  1. Depends on what state you live in..

  2. Your Ethernet card will work with your DSL, as long as your broadband modem has the Ethernet RJ45 jack on it.

The wireless will only work if the Ethernet card is designed for wireless use and you have a 'wireless access point'.

You will need a 'wireless access point' or wireless 'router' for this to work.  Your DSL comes into your residence and connects to you DSL modem.  You need to connect your DSL modem to a 'wireless access point' or wireless router.  Once you have that set up, your wireless laptop will access the Internet.  It is a little more complicated than it sounds, but not bad, because you have to program the equipment to set up a wireless network.  You want it secure so your neighbors cannot access your wireless signal.  If you follow the instructions or the equipment's installation 'wizards', you will be surfing in no time.

  3. 'ethernet card' would be wired internet.

'wireless lan', 'wifi' would be wireless.

If your DSL provides you a connection with Cat5 (Category 5) cables, and you have built in wifi in your laptop, purchase a 'ethernet to wifi adapter' to have wifi connectivity in your home or office.

An example of such an adapter is this : http://www.boingboing.net/2002/08/28/eth...

Note: I picked up that link randomly from the internet just for the sake of an example. You would do better to ask your local computer dealer for such an adapter.

  4. You already have dsl, so you have a broadband modem.  Since you see an antenna, it sounds like this might be a modem/router combination.  Check with your internet provider.

Otherwise, if you want wireless, you'll need a wireless router.

Your friend's laptop has a built-in ethernet card.  That allows you to hook up wired, not wirelessly.  If there is no wireless adapter in the laptop, you can get one that connects to the usb port.

  5. Hi - if the laptop has an Ethernet jack on it (looks like a wide telephone jack), use a standard Ethernet cable on it. If the DLS modem has multiple Ethernet jacks on the back (like the 2WIRE AT&T standard modems), then it is most likely a router. You can hook up more computers with no problem. Refer to the router documentation for how to hook up with a wireless adapter. With some older modems, like many cable modems, the primary computer can only be hooked up to the network. More computers can be hooked up with use of a "gateway router", NOT  a "hub".
