Potato would be the only acceptable thing because they have to use something as a binder. I am researching like mad to try to find the best ferret food. Everyone says EVO and Zupreem and 8 in 1 ultimate but all those brands have either fruits and vegitables grains or fish. Fish would not be on the ferrets cousin the polecat's diet in the wild and it is not good for them. People can't be this dumb to have not made a good ferret food by now. I mean come on ferrets were domesticated before DOGS AND CATS! I know the best diet for them would be a raw diet but it is hard to do.

  1. nothing beyond a strictly homemade natural diet has all the requirements you're looking for. probably the closest is Wysong Archetype I, or Innova EVO. however they do have fruits in them, and EVO has herring meal.

fruits (especially those that have already been semi-processed) aren't quite so hard on a ferret's system as veggies are, so if i had to see one on their ingredients list, i'd go for fruits. and while fish aren't the main source of food for polecats in the wild, don't forget that ferrets are also related to otters...a mustelidae who does eat fish. i would expect that if it is found in a ferret diet, they could benefit more from the fatty acids in it than having it be detrimental to their health. while you may not see a food which meets all of your standards, i would consider some of the foods out there good ones. maybe not perfect, but good nonetheless.

dog & cat foods are also not perfect. the same ingredients you are looking to keep out of ferret foods are seen in dog & cat foods as well. when's the last time you saw a cat gnawing on wheat germ? food manufacturers are getting better at making decent foods for animals, but only mother nature can make exactly what they need.

  2. You have to consider what their natural diet would be in the wild.  I have so many issues with zoo's that feed Meerkats an improper diet of dog/cat food and fruits and veggies that are not a part of their native diet.   Do the research then feed you ferret accordingly.
