  1. It helped the terrorists involved in 911...

  2. from what i know they are used to help students learn a little more because in the cockpit of the Sim the gages and and controls work just like they would in a real airplane i also know that they used Microsoft flight simulator 2004 allot i used to have it it works really good

  3. I think at the very least it would help with getting a familiarity with the "artificial horizon" controls...

  4. I found it very very helpful for practicing instrument approaches.

  5. Simulators are great for any type of learning but nothing compares to the real deal.  You will learn something from the simulator but don't pay an arm and a leg for one if you are questioning it.

  6. It's already been mentioned, but I found microsoft flight sim extremely helpful practicing instrument approaches and IFR flight.

  7. From what I understand, Microsoft Flight Simulator is used extensively to help student pilots get familiar with controls in the classroom, very much like the driving simulators for drivers ed.

  8. Save your money and buy flight time.

  9. FlightGear and X-Plane are excellent sims. X-Plane has an FAA-Certified version you can log flight time with. But both are useful in their own right (plus, FlightGear is free).

They do help. Especially with IFR flight. You'll have to prove yourself in a real plane eventually anyway, but a sim could accelerate your learning with less cost.
