Does a gas powered R/C car really need the glow plug starter?

Question

I'm looking into getting a gas powered R/C car for my husband and the people I'm looking to buy from keep mentioning that I need to shell out another $50 for a glow plug starter. Do I really need one or is there a cheaper alternative I can use? Aren't they just tiny lighters?

Please help someone!

you should be able to get a good glow starter for 13 $.

RC engines are actually very small diesel engines, and without something to heat them up they will be hard to start and may not run smoothly for a bit. It's an expensive hobby.

He will love nitro R/C. But they are trying to take advange of you on a $50.00 glow ignitor. You can buy 'em all day for less than $20.00 and some for less than $10.00. Another suggestion that I might make is this: FIND ANOTHER HOBBY SHOP. If they try and s***w you on an ignitor, no telling what they will do to you on other esstentials such as fuel and glow plugs. Don't let this discourage you. It's a great hobby and he will love it.
