Does a gas powered R/C car really need the glow plug starter?

I'm looking into getting a gas powered R/C car for my husband and the people I'm looking to buy from keep mentioning that I need to shell out another $50 for a glow plug starter. Do I really need one or is there a cheaper alternative I can use? Aren't they just tiny lighters?

Please help someone!

  4. RC engines are actually very small diesel engines, and without something to heat them up they will be hard to start and may not run smoothly for a bit. It's an expensive hobby.

  5. He will love nitro R/C. But they are trying to take advange of you on a $50.00 glow ignitor. You can buy 'em all day for less than $20.00 and some for less than $10.00. Another suggestion that I might make is this: FIND ANOTHER HOBBY SHOP. If they try and s***w you on an ignitor, no telling what they will do to you on other esstentials such as fuel and glow plugs. Don't let this discourage you. It's a great hobby and he will love it.
