Does a heat pump require a furnace?

Question

My son just bought a home that only has baseboard heaters as a heat source and would like to have central air conditioning, and heating. We're considering a heat pump because of the energy efficiency. Will he have to get an electric furnace also?

it does require that you have an air handler unless you buy the single pump not the split..
