Does a higher volume waste more energy??

Does a radio waste more energy when it is turned up loud ?? is there a difference in energy usage from a radio that is turned up loud from one that has a lower volume?

  1. It uses more energy, but if you need or like the volume loud it doesn't waste any energy.


  2. yes.  it can amount to a lot in rock concerts. In your car it can cost an extra $.05 per hour.

  3. yes, the speakers in a radio work off from the vibrations created by a magnet on the back of the speaker, and it takes more electricity to make the vibrations stronger, and therefore louder.

    however the extra usage is minimal.

  4. The energy a radio uses is made up of 3 components. First is speakers, second is amplification of signal and third is finding and decoding the signal.

    Finding and decoding the signal is very insignificant. Amplification and speakers   have  a power draw that is based on the maximum possible speaker output plus the actual sound level.

    Thus you get lowest power use if your radio can only put out a very small sound (like ear buds) and the volume is turned way down.

    As a young man I had a radio that did not require any battery or electrical source, and would power only one ear bud. That was a true marvel of energy efficiency.

  5. It's only "wasted" if you're not using it.
