Does a hurricanes circulation change if it goes from the northern hemisphere to the southern hemisphere?

  1. hurricanes in the southern hemisphere have the opposite rotation from ones in the northern hemisphere.  But a hurricane that crossed the equator would not change it's direction of rotation.

  3. very good question. i don't believe it could/would and if it tried it would probably die before circulating the other way

  4. HOWEVER, recently in the Indian Ocean, a tropical disturbance with a weak circulation initially north of the equator, crossed to south of the equator, and crossed back to the north. During this while process it maintained its original direction of rotation.

    There is no physical reason why this can't happen. It is pretty rare, though.

  5. They do rotate in opposite directions in the northern and southern hemispheres.  I do not believe a tropical system has ever crossed the Equator, as they form north or south of the Equator, and eventually move poleward from there.
