Question:

Does a low spin driver = lower distance, more control?

What about workability? Is the spin attributed to a propensity to hook and slice or is it overspin and roll? Please fill me in on this.

  1. Spin does a lot of things to a ball, you want to be able to draw or fade your ball away from hazards. You actually gain distance from a draw.

  2. Lower spin = Longer distance.

    Workability = Unforgiving.

    Forgiving = Not very workable.

  3. To answer the first part of your question.   No a low spin rate does not mean lower distance....it is designed to provide a straighter ball flight..

    The second part.......Low Spin drivers are inherently less workable   Workability relies on spin

  4. I don't know much about golf, but I think you got it.  if you slice or hook every shot, then you want to slice or hook as little as possible.

    but I don't know why you wouldn't want to create more lift so the ball goes farther, so maybe it would make sense that it's talking about the hook/slice spin.

  5. Less back spin gets better for your swing as your swing speed gets faster. A slower swing actually might not benefit from a lower back spin rate. You need enough back spin to create ideal lift for your swing, and preferably no more than that. You can find the optimal numbers for you at a club fitting much quicker than guessing.

    Side spin is a different issue. This is where slices and hooks are accounted for. It's created by open or closed club face, or swing path at impact. Of course the better you get the more you may want to be able to move the ball left or right. Finding the right balance between forgiveness and workability in a driver has got to be one of the hardest equipment choices available.

    I just tend to go a more forgiving driver (bigger sweet spot) and not worry too much about working the ball, I'll take a straight shot when I can find one. Good luck.
